Toxins in the Environment
Mike Thornton's discussion of toxins in our environment was news to me. I was completely unaware of the extremity of toxic waste, and the health hazards that accompany it. But although it was a big surprise and it freaks me out a bit, I'm stuck on what should be done about it. We can toss toxic waste aside, bury it, rid of it for now, but what is going to happen when it begins to pile up? 100-200 years down the road, is all that toxic buildup going to be an extreme health hazard, even more so than it is now? Probably. I think something should definitely be done in order to clean up the waste, and i think it is a government issue, but I don't necessarily trust the government to rid of the waste properly. If burning the waste could be a possible way out, then I would take that route, but it seems as if that would be extremely harmful to the environment. I feel that toxic waste is a huge problem, yes, but at the same time, educating people about it seems to instill unnecessary fear, but in turn doesn't create any action. Toxic waste that is exposed or dug up should be the main concern, with follow up plans for the waste under the soil. I honestly cannot conjure up any good ideas for what should be done with the toxic waste, because I don't feel that discarding it anywhere could ever be considered actually cleaning it up.

I was just as unaware of all the toxic waste in our enviroment as you. It was crazy to hear about all the waste we have surrounding us. I agree with you, 100-200 years down the road its going to be an extreme health hazard, even more than it is now. and thats scary. the hardest part is that now that we are educated about it, we need to take action.
I liked how Keely spoke about Nuclear energy with her husband. Sure it's clean, but where are we going to put all the waste? And don't say Nevada. Whats going to happen in 300 years when we have a whole crapload of nuclear energy?
I agree with you in terms of being freaked out about the toxins in our environment. Its really scary to think that we consume these harmful toxins daily without knowing, let alone passing harmful toxins to our children through breast feeding. I do though, think that people should fear for their well being. People need to become aware of the situations before them.tr
I am completly with you when you say that you don't know how it would be possible to safely rid of the toxins, and the fact that you do not trust the governement to rid of it properly. I knew about the issues but was also shocked as to the extent of it. I personally feel that the only thing health wise and economically that we can do right now is to educate people about the toxins that they may be exposed to and make sure that people living in, or perspective buyers, are made aware of the toxins that they might be exposed to. Untill extensive study is conducted on how to safely and effeciently rid of toxins, I dont feel that we should make any attempts to move it. We just need to be aware of it and stay away from it when possible.
